What are cafestol and kahweol?

In a small randomized, double-blind crossover trial, 10 healthy men consumed controlled preparations of purified cafestol or cafestol plus kahweol for 28 days. Cafestol raised serum lipids at the tested dose, while kahweol added a smaller additional effect on cholesterol measurements.

That trial helps identify cafestol as an active cholesterol-raising component of unfiltered coffee. It does not mean that every cup produces the same change: the study used controlled daily diterpene doses, and actual intake depends on preparation and serving pattern.
