The Asikana Story
Established in 2008 by Mr. Bodja Gelalecha and his family, Asikana Coffee Farm operates with the Afan Oromo phrase, “We start from here,” as its guiding principle. This reflects their mission to improve the living standards of their community by providing education, sustainable agriculture, and development opportunities.
The farm’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond coffee. Asikana integrates vegetable plots and an apiculture project alongside its coffee farming. Honey production enhances coffee yields through active pollination by the honey bees and helps create a thriving ecosystem.
What Makes Ethiopian Coffee Unique?
Ethiopian coffee has long been celebrated for its distinct characteristics:
- Flavor Profile: Ethiopian natural-processed coffees are famous for their vivid, fruity flavors, such as blueberry, strawberry, and tropical fruits, along with wine-like notes. The natural processing method—where the coffee beans are dried with the fruit still intact—amplifies these flavors by infusing the beans with the cherry’s sugars and compounds.
- Home sweet home: Ethiopia’s high altitudes, fertile soil, and heirloom coffee plants create the perfect environment for producing exceptional coffee. Asikana’s regenerative farming practices and organic certification honor coffee’s ideal ecosystem and demonstrate a commitment to future generations of quality.
- Heirloom Cultivated Varieties: Ethiopia’s heirloom coffee cultivars contribute to its distinctiveness. Unlike modern hybrids, these cultivars developed complex genetics over decades, translating to unparalleled flavor complexity, depth and consistent high quality.
- Expert Natural Processing: Ethiopian farmers have perfected the natural processing method over centuries. Also known as "dry process" coffee, this technique involves drying the entire coffee cherry intact, allowing the beans to absorb the unique aromatics from the pulp. When moisture and fermentation are carefully controlled, this method produces a distinctive and complex balance of sweetness, brightness, body, flavors, and aromas.
- A Harmonious Environment: Integrating beekeeping at Asikana creates a mutually beneficial relationship between coffee plants and pollinators. By blending traditional and modern beekeeping methods, the farm supports biodiversity and enhances the overall quality of its coffee.
Supporting a Community-Driven Vision
Asikana’s commitment to its community is as strong as its dedication to coffee quality. By providing education and economic opportunities to over 500 producers and their families, Asikana exemplifies how coffee farming can uplift entire communities. Every cup of coffee from Asikana tells a story of sustainability, tradition, and hope for a brighter future.
